In 2017, a total of 99,502 GMC units were sold in Canada and 560,687 in the U.S. It was a 12.3 percent decrease in year-over-year sales.
GMC vehicles are sold in Canada by General Motors of Canada Limited (GMCL). GM of Canada is headquartered in Oshawa, Ontario. It has around 9,000 employees across the country. Besides GMC, GMCL also markets Buick, Cadillac, and Chevrolet brands.
In 1908, William C. Durant founded General Motors (GM) as a holding company for Buick. The following year, GM bought the Rapid Motor Vehicle Company and Reliance Motor Car Company. In 1912, GM started to sell vehicles of these two companies with the “GMC Truck” logo. Soon GMC became a well-known brand as a reliable truck. For World War I, GMC manufactured over 8,500 trucks for the US Army. Since then, GMC has produced trucks of various capacities for heavy duty commercial work. Today GMC is known for its trucks, crossovers/SUVs, and commercial vehicles. Sierra, Canyon, Terrain, Acadia, Yukon, Denali and Savana are some of the popular GMC lines of vehicles.
