Are New Cars Less Likely to be Stolen?

Year after year, the IBC(Insurance Bureau of Canada) publishes a list of the top stolen vehicles in the country. The IBC has been doing so for the last 13 years, and it is a good way to understand what happens out there. But there is something that sounds very interesting: New Cars are less likely to be stolen.

Yearly Report: The Years 2014, 2015 & 2016 in Numbers

First, to understand the report, it's accurate to confirm that, while it is done yearly, it is based on the actual Insurance Claims among the multiple Insurance companies that operate in Canada. Here you can read the full 2016 report, and I also summarize these all on the following list:

Things to Note: +10 Years Cars, Ford F-Series & New Cars

There are multiple things we can understand from this actual report. Following, a few things to note from it:

  • Most models were produced between 2003 - 2007: Cars built more than ten years ago rank as the most stolen ones. It is important to note that, except the 2003/2006 Escalade and the 2010 ZDX, there are no other luxury vehicles on this list.
  • Ford F-Series is by far, the most stolen vehicle in Canada: While also the most popular and the top seller coast to coast, it makes sense that it is one of the most targeted vehicles in the country.
  • New cars (the ones from the same year or 5 years before) are not in the top 10: And this happens because of multiple reasons. New vehicles come with modern security systems, are better tracked by the manufacturers and insurance companies and are harder to "resell" on the black market.

Fast Conclusions

I think it is evident enough how things happen in general, but if it kind of helps you to feel "safer," for sure new cars are way less likely to be stolen. On the other hand, if you own one of these "most stolen" kind of vehicles, be aware of it and improve your way of keeping it secure.
