It is a Good Moment to Use GasBuddy in Canada

Over the last three years, fuel prices have been moving up and down steadily on the average 1.20CAD per liter. Please note all my references will be related to the Greater Montreal Area, it is clear that all gas prices move a little bit differently across the country. But recently, it has jumped into a high 1.58 that represents more than a 25% increase compared to the historical average.

If You Haven't Heard About GasBuddy, it is Time Now

A 25% increase, for an average commuter that spends 200CAD/month only in fuel, would end up being an extra 50CAD per month which "would" translate into 600CAD/year if gas prices remain at that level.

GasBuddy is a social App (and website) about gas prices that are very helpful. Users(drivers) like you and me, in exchange for reward points, will report gas prices among the places they regularly visit, resulting in an interactive map that shows you all costs around a specific location.

GasBuddy Prices Montreal: Map

This GasBuddy chart from May 30th, 2018 shows up prices that go from 1.489 to 1.331. GasBuddy directly points it out before you hit the road.

Costco Is Always Around 10 Cents Cheaper in Average

If you use to go regularly to Costco, then this may be an excellent opportunity to fuel up there. In the previous chart, the 133.1 price at the bottom right is a Costco next to Montreal downtown.

While price is the main benefit, there are some things you should know about getting fuel at Costco:

  • A membership is required: On average, these start at around 65CAD tax. inc. per year, so if we do the math... 650 liters = 12 full tanks for a Nissan Rogue. Assuming the unlikely chance that you do not buy any Costco wholesale product, after the 12 refuel, the membership would be paid an from there on, everything will be savings, compared to the average fuel price in your city/town.
  • Only Debit & MasterCard accepted: Although it is not a big issue, it is worth to mention it.
  • Expect some lines: But they have many pumps. Just note that on a full tank refuel, you will be saving around a good 6,50CAD you can invest later on.

Good luck with the fuel and get the App on your phone. It is a Good Moment Now.
